GEO for Startups Without an SEO Team: What to Use and What to Do First

No SEO hire? You can still find out whether chatGPT and Claude recommend your startup, and fix the biggest gaps in 30 days. Here is a simple plan and the tools that fit a small budget.

The short answer

A startup without an SEO team needs a tool that does three things: shows whether AI assistants name you when buyers ask about your category, explains why not, and gives a short list of fixes a founder or marketer can ship. Good low-cost starting points are BeeVisibl (free plan, with fix plans on Pro), Otterly.AI Lite ($29 a month) and, if you already use it, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit.

A 30-day GEO plan for a small team

Week 1: get a baseline

Write five questions your buyers really ask, such as "best invoicing tool for freelancers in India". Leave your brand name out; real buyers do not type it. Run them on the AI engine your customers use most and note who gets recommended and which websites are cited.

Week 2: make your site readable to AI

  • Allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) in robots.txt.
  • Publish an llms.txt file that says plainly what you sell, who it is for and what it costs.
  • Add Organization and product schema (JSON-LD) to your homepage.
  • Make sure important pages are in the HTML the server sends, not only drawn by JavaScript in the browser.

That last point is easy to miss. When we checked our own site, our blog posts were rendered in the browser, so AI crawlers saw only the homepage text on every blog URL. Rendering those pages on the server fixed it. If your site is a single-page app, check this first.

Week 3: give each missed question a page

For every buyer question where you were not mentioned, publish a page or post that answers it directly and honestly, including how you compare with the tools AI did recommend. Then get listed where AI looks for options: G2, Capterra, Product Hunt and the roundup articles it cited in week 1.

Week 4: re-check the same way

Run the same five questions on the same engine. Site fixes can show up within a few weeks once pages are re-crawled; third-party listings usually take longer but move answers the most.

Tools that fit a startup budget (prices checked in October 2026)

BeeVisibl

The free plan checks Claude and includes BeeAsk (buyer-question checks), BeeScan (site readiness audit) and BeePrep (llms.txt and JSON-LD generator). Pro, at $99 a month or ₹9,999 in India (BeeVisibl pricing), adds ChatGPT checks and BeeFix, which turns missed questions into a ranked list of fixes, so you are not guessing what to do next. It checks ChatGPT and Claude today, with Gemini in testing and Perplexity planned, and runs checks on demand rather than daily.

Otterly.AI

Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot (Otterly pricing). A good choice if you mainly want daily monitoring across several engines.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

$99 a month per domain, billed annually, for 25 daily prompts plus an AI-readiness site audit (Semrush AI pricing). Worth it mainly if you already pay for Semrush.

FAQ

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap. SEO is about ranking in search results; GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being named and cited in answers from AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude. Crawlable pages and clear facts help both, but GEO also depends heavily on which third-party sites AI trusts.

Can a founder do GEO alone?

Yes, for the first round. The site fixes take a day or two, and one honest page per missed buyer question is a few hours each. Outreach to review sites and roundups is the slow part.

Prices are taken from each vendor's pricing page and were checked on 12 October 2026. They change often, so confirm on the vendor's site before you buy.
